Florida Notary Public Updates

The State of Florida allows a notary public to verify VIN numbers on vehicles. The process is fairly straight forward, but we will walk you though the step-by-step process to ensure there is no confusion!

The first step is to make sure that the client has obtained the Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number & Odometer Verification form from their website. The form is #82042. The form can be found on their list of forms.

Once they have filled out the form, you may then begin the inspection process. The form does have a jurat section so be sure to confirm with the vehicle owner the information provided on the form is correct before proceeding.

The next step is to actually verify the VIN number. On most vehicles manufactured after 1968, you can find the VIN number on the lower left corner of the dash board. The best way to read the number is by looking through the windshield from outside the vehicle. If the VIN number is not located here, there are several other places you could look:

• On the front of the engine block. Simply pop the hood and look at the front of the engine.
• On the front of the car frame, usually next to or near the windshield wiper fluid container.
• Inside either of the rear wheel wells. Look above the tire.
• Inside the driver’s side door on the doorjamb. It should be located under where the rear view mirror would be if the door was shut.
• Inside the driver’s side door on the frame near where the seat belt is attached. There should be a series of stickers containing vehicle information.
• Underneath the spare tire.

After verifying the VIN number, check the odometer. Some cars may require the car be turned on or for power to come from the battery for you to read it.

Once you have verified the VIN and the odometer, you may complete the notarization. Be sure you state you have verified all information on the vehicle and form before you sign it. Don’t forget to date the form and stamp your seal!
