Florida Notary Public Updates

Expand Your Business – Become a Remote Online Notary

As technology continues to evolve, so does the way notarial services are delivered. In 2019, Florida introduced Remote Online Notarization (RON), allowing commissioned notaries to notarize documents for clients who aren’t physically present—so long as specific legal and technological standards are met. If you're a Florida notary public interested in expanding your services and reaching more clients, RON may be the next step in growing your notary business. Here's what you need to know to get started.

Florida Allows Remote Online Notarization

Since 2019, the State of Florida allows certain notaries public to notarize for people who are not physically present, but who are legally present by means of communications technology that complies with the requirements of Florida law and administrative rules.

What Florida Remote Online Notarization is Not

Many who are just hearing of this concept assume that remote online notarization can be performed using everyday audio-video communications tools that are widely used for teleconferencing and video meetups with friends. In fact, remote online notarization requires the use of only the exact types of technology specified in Florida law and administrative rules.

Florida’s Special Requirements for Remote Online Notarization

Only a Florida notary public who has also satisfied all additional, state-specified requirements may perform notarizations for remotely located people. In addition to holding a current Florida notary public commission, the notary must complete an approved Florida Remote Online Notary Public Training Course, obtain a bond specifically for Florida Remote Online Notaries, and register (file) their intent to perform remote online notarizations.
