TOPIC: Can I notarize a document in a foreign language?

Can I notarize a document in a foreign language? 4 years 6 months ago #38

Someone asked me to notarize a document that was completely in Spanish the other day. I cannot speak or read Spanish, can I still notarize that document?

Florida allows you to notarize documents that are in foreign languages. When notarizing these forms, you still need to complete all of your responsibilities as a notary. You need to ensure you can communicate with the signer, or have a qualified translator available. Ensure you know what act you need to complete, if the signer cannot tell you, do not proceed with the notarization. If you do proceed, the certificate will still be completed in English.

Remember, notaries cannot offer advice on which notarial act should be completed, and if you are ever unsure of a notarization you have every right to refuse to complete it.

Here are the Governor's suggestions on the topic (on page 37).
